We will provide brief history highlights of the style referred to as tai chi chuan. Tai Chi History should be considered with reference to form and philosophy, the social, political, and religious influences all molded the history of the Tai Chi. In fact, there is a overwhelming evidence that the philosophy of Tai Chi, "overcoming softness with hardness", was discussed and journaled almost 100 years prior to there being a form to connect styles. Also the symbol for Tai Chi (the yin-yang) was used to symbolize balance & counter-balance for decades prior to their being a form called tai chi. Lets jump on the tai chi timeline in the 1800's: Yang Lu Chan was an exceptional fighter in the early 18th century, to continue improve he sought out and learned from Chen Ch'ang-Hsing. After many years of successfully fighting, Yang Lu Chan taught his two sons, Yang Pan Hou and Yang Chien-Hou. Yang Pan Hou possessed and sharpened athletic skill that earned him an excellent reputation as a good fighting kung fu man. Students and Members should log in to review and download audio tracks, more information. After being summoned by the Manchu's to teach his families kung fu, Yang Pan Hou modified the style to a softer version, protecting the fighting secrets from the occupying Manchu's. This new, softer style became known formally as the Beijing Yang Style and it is the popularized style we see on television. Yang Pan Hou taught only three disciples the original Yang style, one being Wang Jiao-Yu. There were two disciples of Wang Jiao-Yu, one being Kuo Lien Ying. Master Kuo brought this Tai Chi to the U.S. in 1965, teaching at the Portsmouth Square in San Francisco. Master Chin was the first student of Master Kuo in the U.S., and started by learning Tai Chi on the rooftop of the Sam Wang (now the SW Hotel) hotel in downtown. Master Chin also led the effort to create a school for Master Kuo and maintained the school for over a year when Master Kou went back to Taiwan and returned with Mrs. Kuo.
